Do Clip-On Earrings Hurt? How to Find the Most Comfortable Pair
Short answer: a well-fitted pair should not hurt, but a poorly fitted one will. If your ears are unpierced, or your piercings have closed, clip-ons are the fastest way to wear fine-jewelry style, as long as you choose the right pair. Comfort comes down to four things: the clip, the weight, the fit on your earlobe and how long you wear them.
Why some clip-on earrings are uncomfortable
Most discomfort has one of four causes:
- Too much pressure. A clip that grips too tightly squeezes the lobe and gets sore within an hour or two.
- Too much weight. Heavy drops pull downward and make the clip work harder to stay in place.
- No cushioning. Hard metal pressing straight onto skin hurts sooner than a padded contact point.
- Poor placement. Clipping too close to the edge or the thin top of the lobe puts pressure where there is the least cushioning.
Clip types and how they feel
- Invisible spiral-back clips sit low and clear behind the lobe, so the earring looks like a stud. A flat spiral coil inside a soft silicone pad spreads the pressure.
- Screw-back clips let you adjust the pressure with a small screw, which helps if your lobes are thin or thick.
- Cushion clips are the classic hinged clip, like a vintage clip-on, with a large silicone cushion that spreads the grip across the lobe.
- Ear cuffs wrap around the ear instead of clamping the lobe, so they need no piercing and no clip pressure.
Our Margaux uses an invisible spiral back: a clear, low-profile backing with a flat spiral coil set inside a soft silicone pad that spreads pressure across the lobe. Styles such as Vero, Tiana, Jayne, Hazel, Tyla, Sabrina and Audrey use the same invisible spiral back. Gigi, Ivette and Zora use an adjustable screw-back with a clear silicone pad, so you can set the pressure yourself. Our cushion-clip styles use a hinged paddle clip with an oversized silicone cushion, like a classic vintage clip-on.
How to choose the most comfortable pair
- Start with a small, light style. Huggies and studs are the easiest first pair.
- Look for padding or adjustability if you are sensitive to pressure.
- Check the size and weight on the product page. Lighter earrings are generally more comfortable for long wear.
- Match the earring to the occasion. Wear your lightest pair on long days and save statement styles for dinner or events.
How to put them on comfortably
- Clip onto the fleshy centre of the lobe, not the very edge.
- With a screw-back, tighten only until the earring holds firmly, then stop.
- Make sure the earring sits flat and does not tilt.
- If the lobe starts to feel sore, take them off and let it rest before wearing them again.
Will clip-on earrings fall off?
A well-fitted clip should stay put through normal wear: walking, talking, a hug. If an earring slips, the usual causes are a clip that is too loose or a drop that is too heavy for the lobe. Tightening a screw-back slightly or choosing a lighter style usually solves it.
Clip-ons or ear cuffs: which should you choose?
Choose clip-ons if you want the look of studs, hoops and drops. Choose ear cuffs if you want to layer along the ear, or if clip pressure bothers you. Many people wear both together for a layered stack. Browse our ear cuffs to see what suits your ear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep in clip-on earrings? No. Take them off before bed so they do not press into the lobe overnight.
Are clip-ons suitable for sensitive skin? Check the base metal and plating listed on each product page. If you know you react to certain metals, contact us before buying.
Can I wear clip-ons if my piercings have closed? Yes. Clip-ons do not use a piercing, so they work whether or not your ears are pierced.
A comfortable statement pair: the Margaux
If you want a bold earring that still feels easy to wear, start with our Margaux Bold Oval Clip-On Earrings, designed by our founder. She started selling clip-ons because her sister has unpierced ears and struggled to find good-looking earrings. The domed oval measures 20mm x 15mm and weighs 3.5g per earring, and its invisible spiral back has a soft, clear silicone pad, so it sits securely on the lobe. It comes in a high-shine rhodium-plated silver finish and an 18K gold-plated finish, and the gold pair carries our Aurous Atelier hallmark on the side profile.
What to pair them with
Clip-ons are easiest to style as part of a small stack. Start with the Margaux, add a no-piercing ear cuff such as the Teardrop CZ Ear Cuff, put a necklace at the collarbone, and finish with the Ida Minimalist Asymmetrical Ring or the Vede Ribbed Cuff Bangle Bracelet.
